This microlot is grown by farmers living on top of a mountain near The Coffee Gardens washing station in Bukyabo. The farmers have different sized plantations and so supply different amounts of coffee to the washing station. Robert Wayo from Miwu has been one of the biggest contributors to this microlot with over 400 kg of red ripe coffee cherries. Within hours of harvesting, the coffee cherries are taken to the washing station in 50kg bags by what are known as 'runners', a team of over 160 men and women employed from the local community.
The Coffee Gardens processing station was established in 2017 as a pilot project by a pair of young coffee industry professionals, Dana Siedem and Shakeel Padamsey. They were initially looking for quality Ugandan coffee, but to no avail. They subsequently decided to work with a small group of farmers, providing them with education on the best ways to grow and harvest coffee. Within four years, they were able to develop Coffee Gardens into its current form, bringing together five micro-plots from the Bukyabo area and collecting coffee cherries from 500 farmers.
